Perhaps you have heard of Premana, this extraordinary village at the bottom of the Valsassina valley that has been producing metal artefacts (blades, scissors, knives) since the 1500s, and perhaps you know of C.A.M.P, a leading company for sports equipment that has its headquarters here.
With this excursion we want to understand a little better this place where industry and tradition have achieved an extraordinary balance. We do this by participating as ‘outsiders’ in one of the most heartfelt traditions here: the ‘ past’, or ‘hearty lunches eaten in the company of the alpine pastures in the period before the cattle return to the valley’.
Everyone tastes together a rice soup with meat broth, (the dose is called ‘part’ and corresponds to 4 portions) prepared according to an old recipe and then divided in the pots that everyone brings to the mountain pasture.
And of course then there is drinking in the so-called ‘cellars’ set up just for that day. And finally there is singing, in the Premana manner with the so-called ‘tiir’..
Have I intrigued you? Well then, bring your bowl and let’s go for a walk. We will walk along paths and cart tracks through the Val Fraina, in a ring that will let us discover alpine pastures and lochs, a unique environment where nature and human presence often blend in perfectly.This is not a normal hike, but really something more, we are waiting for you!

LEVEL: + 550 m approx.
LENGTH: 12 km approx.
MEETING POINT: 8.30 a. m. at the Bione car park in Lecco. From there with a few cars we reach Premana (LC) at the end of Valsassina in about 1 h. Expected return at 16.30
Cost: 20 € + 10 € for your own ration (‘part’) of PAST: rice soup with boiled meat, mouth-watering fried offal .
What to bring: a spoon and a spoon! water! backpack, light clothing.
Difficulty: Paths and mule tracks with some steep sections.
