VILLA OLMO

It is a neoclassical villa inaugurated in 1796. It hosted Napoleon, Ugo Foscolo and Garibaldi. In 1924, the villa complex was acquired by the Municipality of Como, which hosted the International Exhibition for the centenary of Alessandro Volta’s death, as well as numerous conferences, shows and art exhibitions. Today it is used for major art exhibitions.

VILLA DEL GRUMELLO

Also known as Villa Celesia. In some documents dating back to the 15th century, the villa is referred to as Castellazzo. It was frequently visited by Ugo Foscolo, who had a love affair with Francesca, the owner’s daughter. Today it is home to cultural and scientific initiatives and a small hostel.

Built in the first half of the 19th century in neoclassical style. From 1977, it was the home of Gianni Versace, who hosted Madonna, Sting, Elton John, Naomi Campbell and Michael Douglas. Versace was murdered in 1997, and the villa now belongs to a Russian millionaire.

Built in 1720, is a historic Art Nouveau residence on Lake Como in Laglio. In 2002 George Clooney bought the villa from the U.S. family Heinz the “King of Ketchup” for $10 million. Clooney tried unsuccessfully to move to Lierna, seeking more privacy, and by 2015 offers to buy ten times the initial value had already arrived, valuing it at 100 million euros, luxury private villas on Lake Como being rare.

VILLA CARLOTTA

Carlotta, wife of the Duke of Saxony, received the villa as a gift from her mother x her wedding (1847).Famous both for the art collections preserved inside and for the vast botanical garden that surrounds it, part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani circuit. Construction of the villa, originally named Villa Clerici, was begun in 1690. Today the villa is a museum that includes works by sculptors such as Antonio Canova and Thorvaldsen and painters such as Francesco Hayez.

Villa Malpensata today Belvedere, built in the second half of the 18th c. It owes its name to the unhappy location on which it was built on the shore of the lake and connected to the village by steep paths.In 1804 it passed into the ownership of Countess Maddalena Imbonati, who changed the name of the villa to Belvedere. The famous Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni spent several summers here (early 1800s).

Built in 1808 by Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a friend of Napoleon who appointed him vice president of the First Italian Republic. Remained owned by the same family, now by Count Ludovico Gallarati Scotti, who opened the gardens to the public in the 1970s. The rivalry with Sommariva, owner of Villa Carlotta, for having the rarest and most beautiful botanical species allows us today to enjoy this unparalleled garden, now a national monument. In the 1830s’ it was a meeting place for 2 famous lovers: Franz Lizst (Hungarian, composer and conductor) and Marie d’Agoult (French countess and writer).
Hotel de la Grande Bretagne

Opened in 1873 for the Milanese and International upper middle class. In 1932 the structure was enriched with the inclusion of the Folies du Lac casino, later transferred by Benito Mussolini to Campione d’Italia. in 1949 the international hotel school was opened inside, becoming one of the most coveted and prestigious. Abandoned in the 1980s sold in 2000 for 16.8 billion liras, to the real estate company Grimit. It has been a few years since the hotel recovery plan was delivered.

Here Pliny the Younger owned a villa called Tragedia. The original layout of the villa dates back to the 1400s. In 1788 it passed to Count Alessandro Serbelloni, a member of one of Lombardy’s noblest and richest families; Last owner was Ella Walker, donating it upon her death to the Rockefeller Foundation.
