Colmenacco alpine pasture
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Heigh difference:   30 mt
  • Walking time:  about 4 h
  • Meeting point: Erno

A new excursion to discover very little-visited places on the southwest side of the better-known and more crowded Mount San Primo.

We start from the villages of Erno and Veleso perched on the mountains in a sunny position and now scarcely inhabited, they offer the attentive observer evocative corners. In Erno a singular manufacturing history continues, with a factory still established here that exports metal “fabrics” all over the world. At Veleso at “Bellavista” a family of restaurateurs offers surprising dishes prepared by chef Paolo, who after traveling the world has returned here to watch the lake from above.
But let’s not stop in the village, we must go up to the Colmenacco Alp with its enchanting views and once the summer home of cattle transhumance. Animals were transported by ancient “comballi” from the other side of the lake. The cows and goats are still there, but they are here now on a permanent basis.
Just below is the magical Sasso Calvarone that looks over the Isola Comacina, you can even climb it with …a ladder! It is one of the less famous but more interesting erratic boulders in the area.
From there we can continue to the summit of Mount Colmenacco at 1,261 m and then comfortably descend along the mule track that passes through the localities: monti di Erno, Laorno, Frisoni chapel and arrives at Veleso, from there under the cemetery a path starts that leads back in short and Erno. The views of the lake are splendid all along the way.
A perfect hike on clear early winter days, but suitable for all seasons
