Autumn colours on a peakthat symbolises the Italian-Swiss border – a climb you should experience at least once in your lifetime

Anyone who takes thelittle trainup doesn’t realise what they’re missing, and we walk there, away from the crowds. One of the most beautiful walks to reach a legendary peak. Up there, you’ll also find a recent work by star architect Mario Botta, the ‘Fiore di pietra’, but along the route the architecture is rural, reminding us of how busy these sun-drenched slopes once were: ancient snow shelters, stone farmhouses, steep meadows, and incredible colours and views across the entire Alpine range.
And yes… a truly bountiful mountain, once home to those who took their animals there to graze, and today to those who, with varying degrees of effort, climb up in search of these sweeping views.

It’s a very varied circular route , alternating between steep climbs and gentler paths, and if we’re lucky we might even spot a few chamois, which are right at home in these parts. It’s particularly enchanting at this time of year… ready to set off with your rucksack on your back?
