Autumn Colours in the Muggio Valley: from the flavours of Prabello to the summit of Sasso Gordona
We’ll take you on an unforgettable journey into the very heart of the most authentic Ticino. Our itinerary begins in the picturesque village of Cabbio, a gem of the Muggio Valley where time seems to have stood still, amongst historic stone cottages, the small local museum and the incredibly orderly Swiss stacks of firewood. We’ll leave the village behind to set off along paths that are partly cobbled and partly mountainous, immersing ourselves completely in the vibrant natural surroundings.
We’ll be walking through dense woods of chestnut, beech and rowan trees, which at this time of year are ablaze with the warm, magical hues of autumn foliage. Before long, we’ll reach a stunning panoramic stretch of coastline, offering an unobstructed, breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, from Generoso to Palanzone. Continuing our walk, still sheltered by the woods, we’ll stop off at the Rifugio Prabello, a cosy mountain refuge run by the CAI, where we can treat ourselves to a well-deserved, restorative break with a lovely cup of coffee and a slice of homemade cake.
From here, the hike becomes even more exciting for those wishing to round off the adventure with a climb to the summit of Sasso Gordona. This final stretch requires a degree of caution and a sure footing, as it features a number of metal chains to hold onto to aid your progress. These sections aren’t particularly difficult, but they do require a degree of caution. For those who prefer a more leisurely route, it’s possible to stop at the mountain hut and enjoy the atmosphere without tackling the summit.
ELEVATION GAIN: approx. +850 metres (REDUCED TO +650 for those who stop at Prabello)
DISTANCE: approx. 10 km. DURATION: approx. 4 . 5 hours’ walk.
MEETING POINT: 9.00 am at the ‘’ at BAR ESSENZA, inside the Gran Mercato on Via Sebenico in Como (Tavernola district) – Please park in the multi-storey car park next door. From there, with just a few cars, we’ll reach Cabbio in Ticino in half an hour.
