DEAR WALKERS ! We are about to make an old dream of ours come true: to make you finally discover the Via dei Monti Lariani a fantastic half-coast itinerary that runs all along the western shore of Lake Como and complements to the west the famous Sentiero Del Viandante (Wayfarer’s Path) is just as beautiful, but much less frequented. Of course, we will do it in stages. We start with the April 24/25 bridge. We ascend from the wild Sanagra Valley and descend discovering the small hamlets nestled on the coast of Mount Bregagno with splendid lake views.
Day one
We start from Menaggio, (you can get there by car or come with me by boat from Bellagio, or even by train + boat from Varenna). We ascend from the hamlet of Loveno and just above we meet Barna, a little gem, then through woods and glades we continue into Val Sanagra frequented by ungulates. Continuing on paths that are not particularly impervious we reach the hamlet of Breglia where we would be greeted by “Akbergo Breglia” The day is not over: free of our backpacks we loiter in search of a… Roman tomb … and an ancient convent … and maybe enjoy the evening view from the ancient church of Breglia. ( I’m working on having a fantastic local historian with us who knows the place better than anyone else.)
Day two
Even before breakfast, early risers can enjoy the sunrise overlooking the lake. But we also wait for the lazier ones, and calmly we set off on an itinerary of discovery of the tiny villages that characterize this section of the route: Carcente, Montuglio, Treccione and the respective “mountains” that give the Route its name. Rustic houses, huts, chestnut groves, meadows still mowed, and a succession of views of the Lario. Going down, down we get closer and closer to the sea (…oops I meant to say the lake) which we reach in the beautiful village of Cremia, where we can put our feet in the water. It is time to return unfortunately and we will do so by a typically “Laghee'” means, the “curiera” sung by Davide Van De Sfroos, who has set his songs on this shore.
