Light walk overlooking the lake and visit to the historic Forts of Fuentes and Montecchio. Reachable by train.
History, perfectly preserved military forts, views of the lake, ruins, horses! A hike with little altitude difference suitable for everyone!
From Colico station, we descend towards the lake and walk along the green beaches, skirting the Adda River between riding stables and farms. We reach the Fort of Fuentes, built in the 1600s by the Spanish to protect themselves from the Swiss Grisons. We see the remains of the barracks, the bakery, the mill, the church dedicated to Santa Barbara, patron saint of artillerymen, the icehouse… Next to the fort, we visit a perfectly preserved hunting lodge, an interweaving of engineering and nature, we discover the work of the bird catcher who, with great ingenuity, strategy (and I would add, cruelty), captured migratory birds.
We continue our walk along a beautiful path between dry stone walls, stone houses, farms, and the vast Pian di Spagna. We reach Fort Montecchio Nord, part of the famous Cadorna Defence Line, this First World War fortress is the best preserved in Europe! We will have a guided tour where we will be shown all the rooms of the fort and what life was like for the soldiers during the First and Second World War. The production of bullets, how the cannons were manoeuvred, the many risks, the strategies… Once the visit is over in about 20 minutes, we are back at the station in Colico for our return.

MEETING POINT: 09.45/ 10.00 a.m. in front of the entrance to the Colico railway station (at 10.00 a.m. we will be on our way, if you need a bar/bathroom come a little earlier)

What to bring: hiking shoes, water, backpack, clothing suitable for the weather. PACKED LUNCH
